"Ask me to play. I'll play. Ask me to shoot. I'll shoot. Ask me to pass. I'll pass. Ask me to steal, block out, sacrifice, lead, dominate. ANYTHING. But it's not what you ask of me. It's what I ask of myself. ~ LeBron James."
We are the official champions of THE BEAST. Both AA teams are #1 - yes that means SIS gets $24,000. Check out the website for details. http://www.upyourgame.ca/the-beast
After approximately 90 practices and 30 games, the season has come to an end. As a coach, I have to say that this was my most rewarding coaching experience. We had 12 boys committed to learning, and giving their all for the entire season. They were reliable, focused and willing to give 100% for the team. Thank you boys! For those trying out for U13 / U14 Sting teams or for provincial U15 squads, best of luck to you all.
On Thursday, we (those who aren't in the sunny South) will be running the Beast again, this time for speed, and an opportunity to win $12,000 for SIS athletics. We will be doing this right after school.
In the next few weeks, we will be getting together once more for an end of season dinner and a kids vs parents/coaches game. I will be in touch.
Try-outs will happen next week for girls and boys U13 and U14 spring Basketball teams. If you are interested in playing but cannot attend a try-out please let the respective coach know. Players are encouraged to attend at least two of the tryouts. Please check the STING website daily as additional times will be posted once confirmed. http://www.stingbasketball.ca/

AA-Midget Championships - 2011 Stonepark Intermediate School
Monday, March 7th 2:00pm ME Callaghan vs Stonepark (B) 3:45pm Hernewood vs Queen Charlotte (G) 5:30pm Birchwood vs Summerside Int. (G) 7:15pm Queen Charlotte vs Summerside Int. (B)
We will practice at Slemon Park from 4:30 - 5:45 today. No need to send $$, the school is paying for this session. Danny and I will be at the school to take players out at 4:15.
UPDATE: Everything is bumped ahead another day (Thursday and Friday). Trevor is also looking at arranging a practice space for us. I will post details when I have them.
Since the Westisle family of schools has been closed for another day today, I expect that our games will be bumped again until tomorrow. As soon as I hear more, I will post it here.
Because of the storm closure of Callaghan and Hernewood schools today, the AA provincials have been pushed back one day. Now the same game schedule will hold for Wednesday / Thursday.
I am trying to arrange for a practice this evening; stay tuned...
I am not yet sure what is happening today, as Callaghan and Hernewood are not operating. As soon as I hear the details about the provincials schedule, I will post an update. That being said, the boys will not be penalized for not wearing ties today.
For all of the whining, moaning and complaining that our boys did about running "The Beast" obstacle course over the last couple months, here is the result of their efforts. We have finished in the top 8 and now each player will receive a $200 gift card to Sportchek. Several of our players will run the beast one more time as a relay on Wednesday the 9th after school. If we finish first among other Island teams (TOSH AAA Girls, Birchwood Girls and all 4 SIS teams), we win a $12,000 equipment grant for our athletics department.
Sorry for the last minute post - it has been a hectic few days. If tomorrow's weather works out, we will depart after school for Charlottetown, with a quick stop at Subway for food. If weather cancels tomorrow's game, we will probably be playing Monday evening at 7:15. I will confirm as soon as I know for sure.
With only one week remaining in our season, this is the remaining schedule.
Tuesday, Feb 22 - Cancelled Wednesday, Feb 23 - Cancelled Thursday, Feb 24 - 5:00 - 6:30 (at Three Oaks) Friday, Feb 25 - (tent. 7:00) Provincials (semi-final vs Queen Charlotte or East Wiltshire) Saturday, Feb 26 - Provincials (bronze or championship game)
Due to time constraints, last evening's game at Hernewood will not be rescheduled. There will also be no practice this evening due to the school closure. Wednesday's game will now be worth 4 points in the standings, rather than 2. Over the next couple of weeks, the practice schedule may change several times as the other SIS teams try to reschedule makeup games and playoff games also get scheduled. Please keep a close eye on the website.
As the season winds down, we are getting a clearer picture of how the playoffs and provincials will play out. It has been determined that of the 9 teams that play in Midget West basketball, only three will be playing for the "AA" title. The remaining 6 will vye for the "A" championship. As a result, the 2nd and 3rd place teams (ME Callaghan and Hernewood) will compete for the "AA" West 2nd seed, and we have received a bye to the provincials as the "AA" West 1st seed. At the provincials the West 1st seed plays the East 2nd seed, and the East 1st seed plays the West 2nd seed. Winners will then compete for gold, losers for bronze.
In the East the zone playoffs will play out as follows to determine provincial championship participants: (1) Stonepark vs (4) Birchwood (2) Queen Charlotte vs (3) East Wiltshire
The UPEI Men's and Women's Basketball Programs are hosting Dave Love (shooting consultant) for two shooting clinics on Saturday, March 26, 2011. Dave Love has worked with the Phoenix Suns and NBA players such as Louis Amundson, Grant Hill, and DeShawn Stevenson. [Brochure]
Many thanks to the boys, Les, Danny & Neil for a memorable weekend. The boys had a great trip to Bridgewater and came away from the Hebbville Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record. Great effort and lots of reasons for us all to be very proud of our boys on and off the court.
We will be gathering after school today and departing around 4 pm with Les ad I heading right through to Bridgewater. This way, the boys will be well-rested going into Friday's game against Hebbville and our trip will not be rushed.
With this evening's forecast, there are some changes to the schedule...
Today's game against Hernewood has been postponed (date TBA). We are now taking the evening off. If school proceeds with a 1-hour delay on Thursday, then we leave as planned mid-afternoon. If school is cancelled, then travel is cancelled for tomorrow, and we will depart early Friday morning. Details will follow if necessary.
Here is our schedule (partial) for next weekend's road trip.....
Les Smith and I will each be taking 6 boys with us. We intend to leave mid-afternoon on Thursday, weather permitting.

Here are the final results from the Stonepark tournament. Astral Drive defeated Whitney Pier to take gold. Queen Charlotte beat Stonepark to take bronze. Pugwash beat East Wiltshire for 5th.
After 4 games in a 22 hour span, the boys should be tired. We are not on the court again until Tuesday, so please take advantage of the opportunity to rest, Sunday and Monday. The remainder of the week will be a busy one as we prepare for our Mahone Bay trip. Details are in the post below.
Next weekend, we will be heading to Mahone Bay, NS for the 2011 Buccaneer Classic, an 8-team championship-style tournament featuring some very competitive Nova Scotia teams. How we do in our first game determines when we play the rest of our games; winners go to the championship bracket, losers to the consolation side. The quarter final schedule is as follows:
Friday, Jan 21 A 1:30: Bayview vs. Wolfville B 3:00: Five Bridges (Halifax) vs. New Glasgow C 4:30: Truro Jr. vs. Shelburne D 6:00: Summerside vs. TBA E 7:00: Loser A vs Loser B (@ Parkview) F 8:30: Loser C vs Loser D (@ Parkview) G 7:00: Winner A vs Winner B (@ Bayview)

Great job boys! This was a fantastic weekend of basketball for us. Some close games from which to learn and a massive improvement from our first contest with Bayview. In November, we lost by 25 points. In January, we narrow the gap to 2 points. Games like those we had this weekend against Truro and Bayview allow us to see our vulnerabilities and give us the opportunity to address them. The boys should be very proud of their effort and realize that hard word really does bring results.
